Deen was recognized as one of the most honoured academics in engineering to emerge from Guyana as well as his continued involvement in the country’s social development. Of particular note was his role as an external examiner for the physics department of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, and his guidance and assistance to researchers in developing countries in Latin America and colleagues across Europe, India, Egypt and China.

The Guyana Awards (Canada) acknowledge the outstanding achievements of distinguished individuals and organizations in the Guyanese community, and their contributions toward the promotion and development of Guyana, Guyanese heritage and culture. Honourees also provide positive role models for the next generation of Guyanese born in Canada.

This year’s judging panel included Justice Vibert Lampkin, former Judge of the Ontario Court of Justice; Gala Lee, program manager for Asia and the Caribbean, Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO); and Ken Singh, president of Atlas International Freight Forwarding Inc. (Atlas Cargo).

The Guyanese Awards Gala is the official kick-off of the annual Guyana Independence Celebrations, initiating a host of events across Canada and culminating in the three-day Guyana Festival from June 21-22.
