Jamal Deen, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was presented with the technology achievement award and Sonia Anand, associate professor of medicine, received the professional female award.

Deen and Anand were among 10 Indo-Canadians recognized at the evening gala on June 6 attended by more than 1,000 people. Guests included Dalton McGuinty, Premier of Ontario and Stockwell Day, federal Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway.

The ICCC awards recognize the distinguished and outstanding contributions and achievements of Indo-Canadians. It also promotes excellence and positive role models within the Indo-Canadian community, and the Canadian community as a whole.

Deen, a Senior Canada Research Chair in Information Technology, is regarded as one of the foremost authorities in the fields of microelectronics/nanolectronics and optoelectronics. His current research interests are in their applications in life and environmental sciences.

Anand, Eli Lilly Canada-May Cohen Chair in Women's Health at McMaster University and director of the Hamilton Health Sciences Vascular Medicine Clinic, is currently investigating the causes of cardiovascular disease among ethnic groups, population genetics, and women's cardiovascular health.

The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce is a member and sponsor-funded not-for-profit business organization with more than 1000 members from the Canadian business and professional communities. It promotes and facilitates trade and commerce between Canada, India and other countries and provides members with a forum to promote mutual business success, offer learning opportunities and to recognize achievements.
